This exceptional bar and restaurant has won raves from Philadelphia locals for its powerful dedication to the art of beer. The Belgian Café boasts a well-curated selection of a dozen drafts as well as over 200 bottled varieties. Located on a bright, tree-lined corner near Philadelphia's art museum district, The Belgian Café has both inside and outside seating. The food is just as much of a draw as the beer – regulars rave about the absolutely spectacular mussels, harvested off of Prince Edward Island and cooked in one of two different beer broths. Served with fresh-cut Belgian frites and bourbon aoli, both are worth trying. The rest of the menu is equally strong, with diners praising the moist, juicy burgers as well as the copious vegetarian and even vegan options. The brunch menu is also a lot of fun, with incredible French toast one of this place's most popular picks.

Located in Philadelphia's booming Passyunk Square neighborhood, Salt & Pepper has built a reputation for simple, flavorful dishes made with fresh ingredients. The menu is extremely varied, drawing inspiration from all over the globe. Some of the more popular appetizers include the awesome fried plantains with a chilled sardine and onion salad and habanero peppers, as well as the roasted beet and pineapple salad. For entrees, the pan-seared salmon with horseradish mash has plenty of fans. If you’re in the mood for a spectacular burger, the 10 ounce beef with cave-aged Gruyere cheese is not to be missed. There are usually a number of specials on the menu that change daily, all of which are excellent. The bar is also worthwhile, mixing strong, innovative cocktails to order. Desserts aren’t anything to write home about, with the possible exception of the crème brulee. Service Salt & Pepper is good and prices are fairly reasonable.

Founded in 1963 at one of the most productive and exciting periods in American visual arts, the Institute of Contemporary Art has earned a reputation for identifying future talents early in their professional careers and giving them the support they need to develop their work. Andy Warhol had his first museum show here, for instance. For over half a century, the museum has been an essential part of Philadelphia’s cultural and artistic life, and it’s still going strong. The Museum hosts no permanent collection, but it presents a dozen new exhibitions each year. The ICA also offers a wide variety of educational programs and lectures on a diverse assortment of topics. Best of all, admission is absolutely free! The comforting, minimal space is a great place to take a date or just spend an afternoon lost in thought. The first Wednesday of every month is a great time to visit, as the Museum hosts music, participatory activities and more.

Philadelphia's premier venue for Broadway plays, the Forrest Theatre has hosted touring productions of The Phantom of the Opera, Mamma Mia!, Les Miserables and Rock of Ages in recent years. The classically designed theatre opened in 1927 and was one of the more opulent of the venues built by famous theatrical impresarios the Shubert brothers. Over the years a myriad of performers have taken the stage in a variety of productions, including Yiddish theatre, Gilbert & Sullivan, and the Philadelphia orchestra. Currently on the calendar of performances are West Side Story and Beauty and the Beast. Visit their website for ticket information.

Society Hill Playhouse advertises itself as ‘theatre for people who don’t think they like theatre.’ No angst ridden, hard to decipher dramas hit the stage here, in fact, comedies are the majority of their productions, because after all, few people object to having a good laugh. Their long-running production of Lafferty’s Wake is an interactive play that uses audience involvement to pull off its theatrical hijinks. Upcoming productions include Motherhood, the Musical: the Good, the Bad and the Laundry and Cooking with the Calamari Sisters. The small, intimate theatre is housed in a Victorian building with pressed tin walls and high ceilings, which lends a charming, cabaret-style ambiance.

If you’ve never had Indonesian food before, you’re in for a treat. The cuisine of the island nation is remarkably diverse and exciting, drawing inspiration from other Asian cultures while maintaining a style of its own. Philadelphians know that the place to go is Sky Café. The menu is extensive and can be a little overwhelming to newbies, so here are some must-try dishes. Regulars rave about the toothsome kari bhun, a chicken curry made with the thin rice vermicelli noodles known as bee hyun. The flavor is remarkably rich and complex, with a subtle milkiness unlike other curries. Other favorites include the nasi goring, fried rice with slivers of sausage, pork, and pickled vegetables spiced to perfection, as well as the mie BBQ pork noodle soup, which is served with the broth in a separate bowl so you can add as much or as little as you like. Portion sizes are very generous and prices are low. Sky Café is a real jewel of a restaurant.

There’s nothing worse than waking up in the morning to go to class and sitting though class on an empty stomach.

Well no more: Now in addition to the lunch and dinner menu, the West Chester Pita Pit offers five new breakfast pitas beginning last week. The options include: Awakin’ with Bacon, Morning Glory, Ham n’ Eggs, Steak n’ Eggs, and Meat of the day and each breakfast pita comes with eggs and hash browns. It is made to order to include any toppings, veggies, cheeses and sauce desired. It’s a fresh alternative to the food trucks for a delectable, made-to-order breakfast on the go.

The breakfast pitas are the newest addition to the six-year-old establishment located in the heart of town. They’re available all day, because Rob Gillman, West Chester Pita Pit owner and manager, said he thinks breakfast is appealing at any time of the day.

“I like the Awakin’ with Bacon,” Gillman said. “It comes with eggs, hash browns, and bacon and I like to grill onions and green peppers, toss in some cheddar cheese, avocado, and salsa. Yum.”

The pitas are perfect for students on-the-go who want a fresh, delicious and quick— breakfast.

“I have been told that I make the best pita on the east coast, and the perfect one can be made in less than 60 seconds,” Gillman said.

With fresh ingredients grilled in front of customers and immediately wrapped into a pita, the meal is tailored to perfection.

But the Pita Pit isn’t just for students in a hurry, with a scenic location and welcoming atmosphere, the pita can be enjoyed right in the store, with a variety of lunch and dinner options to choose from.

“We offer lots of vegetarian pitas, healthy choices, fresh ingredients and a ton of different meat combinations,” Gillman said. “In addition, unlike most establishments that deliver, we do not have a delivery minimum.”

Deliveries can be placed online or over the phone to satisfy your morning hunger, the Pita Pit can provide a fresh and tasty breakfast. They also offer a variety of lunch and dinner specials, including $4 chicken pitas on Mondays and $4 turkey pitas on Tuesdays.

The Pita Pit provides a delightful alternative to the abundance of fast food and pizza restaurants scattered across the town, and creates an exceptional experience for customers.

“We stress costumer service first and foremost,” Gillman said. “We also feel like we offer a unique product that everyone can enjoy.”

The establishment has continued to evolve and has proved that in spite of so much turn over in town, the Pita Pit is here to stay.

The Pita Pit is located at 139 West Gay Street and can be reached at 610-918-PITA (7482). It is open from 10:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. during the week and closes at 3:00 a.m. on the weekends.
